The ground truth of WCC and our Indian police:

‘Last night a young girl was shouting for help in our society. Hearing the cries I went out on my balcony to see what the matter was. The sight was breath taking. I saw around fifteen men and one single woman. She was howling and screaming for help. I gathered that she was married from past one year and was being tortured and harassed by her husband who was shouting at her and bullying her to the utmost. One of the neighbours had given a call at 100 number i.e. our police. The girl was literally begging for her mobile to call to her parents for help. Her husband with two other men was forcing her to go inside the house which she flatly refused due to her own safety reasons.

Seeing all this chaos, and considering the severity of the situation, my husband gave a call at the WCC, Dwarka and briefed them up with the entire situation. He was told that their team would reach at the earliest. In the meanwhile the police jeep came with three police personnel. There was not one single lady police. One person came towards the girl to enquire about the situation. She requested them for a mobile so that she could give a call to her parents. The police forced her husband to hand over her mobile and then she called upon her parents and briefed them up with the situation. Even after repeated calls No one turned up from the Women Crime Cell.

While the girl was talking to her parents and waiting for their arrival, the police men were busy gossiping with the husband and his friends, laughing away to glory and making fun of that girl. Even after the assessed the situation, no lady police was called for. It almost took an hour and a half for the parents of the girl to reach the site along with other family members. The family of the girl seemed to be well off and educated as a fleet of four cars came together. At first the policemen did not bother, but after they saw the girl’s father rushing towards a man coming out of Audi that had come to a stopped nearby, the policemen at once took the boy into custody and took him to the police station. The girl with her family members accompanied them to the police station also for further proceedings in the matter.’

THE PLIGHT

a)   The Police: Mostly the domestic violence of such kind take place during night time. Even after knowing that a lady police is required, none had been called for. Instead of investigating the matter, they got friendly with the boys people and together started mocking at the aggrieved girl who was all alone and totally helpless. No action was initiated even after the family members had arrived. The moment they saw that the family is financially sound, they turned their entire attention towards them.

b)  The Woman Crime Cell:  even after being informed did not bother to reach the premises. What is their duty? What kind of help do they provide? Is this the manner in which we expect to bring down the atrocities against women? How can a woman alone have the strength and knowledge to stand up for their rights if they are not immediately helped at the appropriate time? We are assured that WCC works tirelessly towards these issues, but the ground reality proves to be entirely the opposite.

Moral: We alone have to face the facts and truth, no one can help us. No matter what we say, women, even today have to stand up for their rights and liberties.  If we want to improve our status i.e the status of women and work for our economic empowerment, we have to fearlessly stand up alone for the same and fight the battle alone. We should not expect anyone to help us. Our one example in person is too big an example for other to set publically and word of mouth spreads.
