The Danger Unknown

A farmer and his wife where they had pigs, goats, hen and many other animals along with a small mouse. All the animals were friendly with each other.

One day the mouse peeped through a small crack in the wall and unintentionally saw the farmer opening a small package. He was curious that it may contain any food item which could be shared amongst his friends but to his horror he found that it was a mousetrap. Yes A mouse trap to catch him indeed!

The mouse got panicky and breathlessly ran around the farmyard warning all his fellow members of this forthcoming danger.

First of all he met the hen. He nervously blurted out to him in despair, “We should be careful as there is a mousetrap in the house!” But the hen seemed to be pretty cool, he answered with triviality: “It doesn‘t concern me, as this is a danger for you and not for me. Why should I bother?” The mouse was shocked. Without wasting time, he raced towards the pig and then the goat to tell them about the mousetrap. To his further disappointment, the pig and the goat too did not show any concern with the new he parted. They consoled him and said that there was nothing to worry about and in return promised to pray for the mouse. The mouse felt sad and lonely. He was depressed by the ground reality he had faced in the need of this hour of danger.

In the night the farmer‘s wife heard a sound of a mousetrap. She hurried to see what was in it, but due to the darkness she did not see that it was a poisonous snake, whose tail was caught by the trap. Unexpectedly the snake bit her and she fainted.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital where they treated her for a few days. Later, when they returned home, she still had fever. The farmer’s doctor had told him that chicken soup would help his wife to regain strength and her fever would subside, so he went to his farmyard to bring the main ingredient and that was the chicken, his hen in the farm.

However her sickness continued for which many friends came to visit her. The farmer butchered the pig to prepare lunch for the visitors. Unfortunately, as time passed, the farmer’s wife became weaker and weaker and one day she succumbed to her injuries. Many neighbours, relatives and friends arrived to attend the funeral. The farmer had to slaughter the goat to feed all of them.

The mouse was a silent spectator to all that was happing with unhappiness as he could do nothing for those who once said were his friends as this was destiny.

Remember, when we see that someone is in difficulty or danger, we all are at risk. The nature of danger is never depicted, therefore it is better to help and encourage the one in need rather than leaving him alone to face that problem.

Moral: There is nothing more dangerous than a closed mind.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MANNERS

Manners play an important part in the life of a human being. For success in any field of life, a man must possess pleasing manners so that his behaviours inspires dignity and respect. 'Manners makes a man' is a true saying. By manners we mean proper and respectful behaviour towards all with whom we come in contact with. Manners have more value in cities than in the villages where simple living still has its own charm and decency but in the cities where the standards of living are high and good manners seem to be vanishing.  Today, we are living in an age of sophistication where modern life is complex and complicated and simple living of olden days has almost become a legend.
In this world of complexity and artificiality, most of the people pretend to be sophisticated, there good manners are very important. You cannot move in society unless you are well behaved, otherwise you are not welcome or acceptable anywhere. However honest may your intentions be or however innocent your behaviour is, it is your decency that makes you acceptable amongst others.
For this one must maintain a good personality along with a good power of speech and conversation, a certainly should be a good listener. These qualifications are important for success in any walk of life as their importance is pervading in modern times. Gone are the days when simplicity, innocence, honesty and any such similar traits of this kind dominated the society.
Good manners are a sure passport to success in life as it endears us to others, helping one to win the confidence of others. A polite answer turns away anger and a kind word uttered in time saves a man from many troubles. It is politeness which succeeds while ability fails. Even a good action will lose its value if the person doing favour utters impolite words. An ill-mannered man, on the other hand, is disliked by everyone and has no chance of success in any walk of life he joins.
Good manners come naturally into a man who is bred-up in a cultured family and are indeed a sign of pleasing personality. A child born in a cultured family will learn to be respectful to others because he will see his elders behaving gently. A child born in an uncultured family will be disrespectful because he sees his elders behaving badly towards others. A child will learn whatever he is taught. So a little carelessness on the part of the elders is likely to spoil the child and that shall be difficult to reform afterwards.

Most parents spend far more time ferrying their children to extracurricular activities or supervising homework than encouraging them to engage in conversation with adults so that small debates within the family help the child in grooming into a good personality. The importance of being polite and well-mannered makes the people you interact with feel valued which reflects one’s own personality. Such deep internal values can only be inculcated in children from their very childhood only.

In such an advanced digital era of today where children are communicating through a coded vortex of social media and smartphone screens rather than face to face, it’s especially more important for parents to devote time to inculcate such etiquettes within them which shall polish them accurately while communicating with others. The biggest problem today is that the youngsters are highly ambitious and overachieving which leads them to overconfidence. But, of course where on one hand qualification is important, there on the other hand how you present yourself and interact with others is equally more important.
Manners and etiquettes add charm and grace by which one can win the hearts of others. They are most precious gifts of civilization. The extent to which one can influence others and the extent to which one can earn love, affection and the good wishes of others, depends upon the good manners and etiquettes. In other words: ‘Manners are the shadows of virtues, the momentary display of these qualities which our fellow creatures love and respect, if we strive to become, what we strive to appear, manners may often be rendered as a useful guide to the performance of our duties.’

The Thing of Most Importance

Once a professor of philosophy came into his class. He brought some items with him and put them on the table. When the class began, he took a large transparent empty jar and started to fill it with two inch stones. He then asked his students: “Is the jar full?” The students nodded their heads in confirmation.

He says, “Really,” and pulls out a pile of small pebbles, adding them to the jar, shaking it slightly until they fill the spaces between the rocks. He asks again, “Is the jar full?” They agree. So next, he adds a scoop of sand to the jar, filling the space between the pebbles and asks the question again. This time, the class is divided, some feel that the jar is obviously full, but others are suspicious of another trick. So he grabs a pitcher of water and fills the jar to the brim and asks, “What am I doing?”

The students were watching the whole exercise inquisitively, unable to understand as to what the professor was up to. The professor continued:  “If this jar is your life, what does this experiment show you?”

A bold student replies, “No matter how much busy you think you are, you can always take on more and more.”

“That can be considered,” the professor nodded his head. He then looked out at the class making eye contact with everyone and spoke, “The rocks represent the BIG things in one’s life that you shall value at the end of your life i.e. your family, your partner, your health, fulfilling your hopes and dreams. The pebbles are the other things one needs in life but aren't of great importance but give life a meaning to live for example things like job, money, appointments, friendships and other necessities etc. The sand and water represent the other very minute things of no importance and are   the stressors in life like watching a television, house hold works or running errands etc.”

Looking out at the class again he asked, “Can you see what would happen if I started with the water, sand or the pebbles first?” There was pin drop silence in the class. The professor carried on, “If you put the water and sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the stones. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small things, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. life i.e spend enough time with family, take care of your health and never forget to develop spiritually – be a kind, honest, sensitive, helpful person. Then concentrate on pebbles i.e. have a job, go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party etc. The rest is just sand and water.”

Moral: Innovation is all about placing priorities.  Start with your big ideas first before you run out of time  Just because the BIG priorities are heavy and difficult to achieve, we shouldn’t turn our attention to smaller ones as an easy way out as they after wards turn out to be a blunder.

Let go the Past

Once there was a free bird. She floated in the sky, catching mosquitos for lunch, swam in the summer rain and was like many other birds, but she had a habit: every time some event occurred in her life, whether good or bad, the bird picked up a stone from the ground for her memory. Every day she sorted out her stones, laughed remembering joyful events, and cried remembering the sad ones.

She always took those stones with her, whether she was flying in the sky or walking down on the earth, she was never to leave them or forget about them. The years passed by and the bird now had a lot of stones, but she still kept on sorting and collecting them, as memories of the past. It was becoming more and more difficult for her to fly with the weight of these stones and one day she was unable to do so.

The bird that was free some years ago could not even walk on the earth, let go of flying for she was unable to even move by her own. She could not catch midges anymore; only the rare rain gave her the necessary moisture to keep her surviving. But a bird bravely endured all the hardships, guarding her so called precious memories. After some time she died of the starvation and thirst. And only those bunch of worthless stones that served no purpose remained back which were later thrown away by strangers.

Moral: - Letting go helps a person to live in a more peaceful state of mind and helps in restoring our balance. It allows others to be responsible for themselves and indicates us to take our hands off situations that do not belong to us. This frees a person from unnecessary stress and tension.

Knowledge is Power

Desire for power is inherent in man. The love of power comes from the consciousness of one’s mental and moral superiority over other created beings. It is instinctive that any person as a superior being must control and dominate others. Over again the awareness that all is not created equal gives birth to the desire to rule and dominate others who are weak; some are intelligent, others dull; some brave and daring, others shy and timid. In the same way there are those who are educated, others comparatively ignorant, some wealthy, others poor.

Power is of two kinds, physical and mental. Physical power is of the lower order as compared to the power of the mind. Uneducated class mainly understands one kind of power and that is of the body. For them, the strength of the arms decide things and they consider it to be right. However with changing times and development, mental power is now recognized as of a superior most and this power has its origin from knowledge only. Knowledge is power and education is the fundamental precondition for personal as well as political development, democracy and social justice. This can be observed with every passing day in our lives. Knowledge is something one gains throughout one’s lifetime as from the time of birth, knowledge begins. Knowledge plays an important role in all spheres of human life as it is the awareness of facts, truths and principles.

It is a powerful factor which helps man to attain success, power and position in life. There is no doubt that physical strength and money are instruments of power. A man who is physically and economically strong commands power over others but the power of knowledge is still greater. It is knowledge that directs any person’s actions enabling one to find the difference between right and wrong, good and bad. It helps a person to overcome the weakness and faults and face dangers and difficulties with courage and confidence. It gives a mental, moral and spiritual advancement to an individual. Education empowers, and education promotes greater participation and there is no development without education.

Knowledge refers to the skills and information acquired through experience and education. Every being is extremely eager to attain power but power should not be misunderstood with physical strength only. Knowledge has given us power to win the space, to fly to the moon, to fight many deadly diseases and cure them. It is this knowledge that has taken us ahead towards development in the field of medicine, surgery, agriculture, information technology etc. Moreover it has also given us the power to communicate with the other parts of the world within a fraction of a second. If today we have reached the top of the mountain of power, i is only due to knowledge only. So we should always be careful that this special power should be suitably balanced by our conscience so that it is not indulged in evil or destructive activities.

Knowledge is like a sharpened sword that can create a bloodshed, if nurtured carelessly. It is therefore very necessary for people to learn that knowledge is essential but wrong usage can lead to formidable disaster  for it is unfortunate that today the same man has started misusing knowledge and has created unfavourable conditions for himself. Knowledge that should be used for peace, prosperity and growth is now also being misused for revenge, enmity and hatred etc. Things that make us despise and look down upon others cannot be right.

There is no doubt that knowledge is Power, but knowledge does not always come with power. This proves that education is must to gain knowledge that is very much a necessity to gain Power. Therefore education is the key to success so that every person who is knowledgeable leads a successful life.
Knowledge has no limits and is the endless pursuit of love. World’s ninety percent of internal and external strife and riots will go away if awareness of the importance of education becomes common amongst all for discipline, order and economy form the basis of the power given by knowledge. Knowledge must mellow in wisdom which is the mark of culture and humanity as it is the quest of knowledge that leads to the realization of the Truth.

Slice of Life

“Living in a world where we have become too dependent upon expecting instant results, we have lessened our capacity to adjust or accommodate. Very few people have patience or fortitude to see things through with love and insight.”

The tolerance power in the people today is decreasing day by day resulting into increase in their temper. Very often we see that waiting for the traffic signal to turn green makes one grumble, angry and some even turn red with fury! Moreover even a small cause for example if a telephone does not connect to someone you are trying makes us curse the phone lines or the internet companies. When a gas stove does not ignite in one click, we tend to get heated.

All the above stated facts are basic every day practical things. Yet what about tolerating differing ideologies and beliefs? We are very quick in judging, hating or even stooping down to the extent of killing because we cannot tolerate the other for who they are or what they represent? To be inflexible or obstinate is ego; the belief that I am right or that mine is the only way forward leads to stubbornness and miscommunication. If I am at least open and humble, I will be willing to stop, listen, and wait and shall always welcome the outcome that shall always come out to be positive. I may even learn a thing or two, but when impatience gets the better of me, I develop a short aggressiveness and the whole track is disrupted!

A deeper, more subtle aspect to this ego is when a person is impatient or intolerant in dealing with their own personality, especially the negative habits as they overrule the brain. Trying to cover up and not wanting to face the truth or manage one’s own shortcomings, a person instead strives to prove that he really does not care or doesn’t want anything or need anyone or aspire to anything in life. Because of all the inner battle within one’s heart, a person tends to shy away from the golden opportunities that come across, just for the fear of being a failure. It is that ego within that guides to not to try for it is better this ways than to fail and make a fool of oneself. But have we ever realised as to exactly who are we fooling? Our own self and no one indeed! Running away from a situation or avoidance means that we are not stretching our boundaries or limits nor are we learning or progressing in life. We are stagnant for the fear within makes us lazy, selfish and self-centered.

A growing aptitude is all about taking risks and pushing oneself to go ahead an extra mile and not just taking the easy way out by remaining firmly within our own comfort zone. This ways we can build a supernatural capability within us and can even see where it is that we have fixed the ‘blinkers’ in life that refuse to deal with certain situations. It is only then that one can progress.

Every day should pass with the feeling that I have learnt something new and grown from it. Even if my learning is just to see something in a new light or gain a new perspective, at least I have expanded my thinking. This cannot happen if I always believe that I am the one who is right and therefore no one can teach me anything.  I need to be open and engaging otherwise my capacity shrinks rather than expands. It requires a deep level of understanding and commitment to analyse the ratio of your own self-progress and well-being. Whatever situation a person is challenged with, one can definitely ask his/her inner self – what can I learn from this? Why has this situation arisen in front of me and not someone else?  And, when we really learn the lesson of humility, we should also ask what can do to inspire others from my learning?

It’s not only about others being my teachers but I can learn from observing myself and the entire performance of my lifetime itself. Instead of cursing the traffic jam etc., I should choose to use the time to slow down my racing horses. When we think that things have taken a turn for the worse then turn it around to find the benefits from that situation, it is wrong.  We should be curious instead of judgemental. It may not be comfortable at first, but having just extended your capabilities will reap benefits for you in every area of life. We cannot receive love or respect until I give it first.

It’s Time… to stretch ourselves by shedding down our ego to accommodate and adjust by being flexible and graceful because as we expand out of our comfort zone, we will truly feel that we are living not just for ourselves but for everyone around us. There is a lot life can teach … if we are willing to learn.

‘Where there is A Will, There is A Way’

'Proverbs like 'where there is will' there is a way’ are often used and experienced in our daily lives because it is a fact that when someone wants to get something from his heart he puts all his efforts and will power to get it. When we feel the dire needs of life, we definitely struggle hard to achieve it. Believe me it is only our strong determination that helps us to find a way to do it so that we can achieve the best results as nothing is impossible once you try hard. If the will power is strong anything can be achieved. In a book 'I Dare' written by Kiran Bedi, she has said that if you want to achieve something you must work hard and throw yourself in the voile of your aim. Do not think about the deepness and results of your task when you achieve your aim. You will definitely forget about the struggle and pain because strong will power is the base of our success.

I believe that a strong determination boosts up the fighting spirit of any individual. Without determination, a person tends to give up too easily. I love to do thread work (embroidery) during my free time. I had once gone to the market to buy threads with my husband. There were many designs displayed in the shop. Infact many were quite big ones. The finished product would have come out to be of somewhere 3* 6 ft. When I asked my husband to help me to choose the best design, he picked up the most difficult but beautiful one, looked at me and with a mocking smile said, “You can never make this. Making small ones is easy but this big is not your piece of cake.” These words pinched me internally.  I resolved that very moment that I shall definitely make it and show what I can do. I quietly chose one more and came out of the shop. And when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy, I made both the designs. No doubt my husband was a great help as he used to buy all the threads I required   but he was very proud too that I had proved him wrong. Today when I look at them myself I too cannot believe my eyes. From then on, I believe a lot in having determination. If I want to accomplish even the smallest task, I never give up too easily or it will never be done. This new-found spirit in me has taken me quite ahead and has also helped me in facing a lot of challenges in life.

We should always remember that God helps only those who help themselves. Nothing is impossible if we try and with the help of our will power, we can achieve anything. The way a small sparrow makes a very beautiful nest with the help of her will power, similarly it is our will power that gives courage and energy to win. The main obstacle in the way of success is tardiness and lack of will power. Therefore we must always be active, ever green and optimistic to hope for the sky and believe me you will definitely achieve you aim.

Never blame fate as only those who struggle become successful. Sometimes one who struggles go on struggling and another person who waits without struggle becomes successful. But it does not happen all the time though fate plays a great role in our success, will power is also very important and with the help of will power one a conquer fate too. But one should not hope for victory before fighting the battle. Luck or opportunity never bothers men who are firmly set on getting ahead. They create the opportunity themselves and make their way to success. Always remember fortune favours the brave. To achieve success make progress and gain profit one has to dare and take risks for “Success is not cheap."

Everybody is well aware that success does not go to those who never struggle. But while dreaming, one should be always ready for hard work. It is not something which can be achieved by spending money, but will power comes from your soul and heart. You will be successful and a successful person is always independent and confident. It is true but success is counted sweetest by everyone who struggles but always remember that success demands hard work, struggle, sacrifice and a lot of patience too.

So struggle hard and be successful, nothing is impossible if your will is strong. You can achieve everything. After all where there is a will there is a way. Do not be afraid of failure because failure is the first step on the way to success; learn to face problems. Bear your troubles don't worry and be happy. Remember that if you laugh the whole world laughs with you but if you weep you will have to weep alone With your strong will power and enthusiasm any great thing can be achieved.
Everybody wants to be successful in his life. But while dreaming success one should not forget the battle, which is necessary for victory. Life is beautiful when the art of living is understood for it has been aptly said.
Life is an art
A mountain of troubles
In your trouble don't cry
You should only try and try
Struggle hard
And conquer the sky
With your skill
And power of will.
To dream is your
Right to struggle is your duty.
Will power is your need
To achieve the sky and to fly.

Five Days Celebration Of Diwali

Diwali is very enthusiastically celebrated for five continuous days and each day has its significance with a number of myths, legends and beliefs.

The First Day : Dhanteras

The first day Known as Dhan Theras marks the beginning of the diwali and it is celebrated to seek blessings of Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. In the amalgamation of Dhan teras 'Dhan' means wealth. She is also worshiped on this day to provide prosperity and well being. The festival of Dhanteras is also known by the names of Dhantrayodashi and Dhanvantari Trayodashi. As this day is dedicated to the festival of wealth, people purchase any new utensil, silver or gold coin or some other precious metal as a sign of good luck on the day of dhanteras. This is also a tradition related with celebrations of the festival of Dhanvantari Trayodashi. Dhanteras festival is ideal time for setting up businesses, commencing new projects, housewarming, deciding wedding dates, buying cars and jewellery. "Lakshmi-Puja" is performed in the evenings when tiny diyas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits.

The Second Day : Chotti Diwali

The Second Day is called Chotti Diwali also kown as Narak-Chaturdashi. This day is is observed to commemorate the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon king, Narkasur. This day is also celebrated as the birthday of  Hanumanji or Hanuman jayanti. Also, on this day  Hanumanji reached Ayodhya to deliver the long-awaited message of Lord Rama’s return.  The people light diyas on chhoti diwali too to fill their homes with light, worship Goddess Laxmi and offer prayers to Her and they also burst firecrackers.

The Third Day : Diwali or Deepavali

The Third Day of this festival of Diwali is the most important day of Lakshmi Puja which is entirely devoted to Goddess Lakshmi. On this day, houses and business centers are renovated and rangoli designs to welcome the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the nights. On this dark new moon night, the entrances to all homes are lit up and decorated with rangoli patterns to welcome Lakshmi, the radiant consort of Vishnu and the goddess of wealth and lustre. Diwali is considered as the last day of financial year in traditional Hindu business for it is considered as a time to shop or start new ventures.

The Fourth Day : Padwa or Varshapratipada

The fourth day of diwali celebrations is 'Padwa' or 'Varshapratipada'. In the North India Govardhan Puja is performed with great zeal and enthusiasm. On this day, Goverdhan Pooja is performed. This day is also observed as Annakoot and prayers are offered in the temples. The day after the Lakshmi Puja, most families celebrate the new year by dressing in new clothes, wearing jewellery and visiting family members and business colleagues to give them sweets, dry fruits and gifts. The day after Diwali is celebrated as Goverdhan Puja when Goverdhan Parbat or Mount Goverdhan, near Mathura, is worshipped as Lord Krishna he lifted mount Goverdhan on his little finger, hence this day is dedicated to the worshiping the mountain.

The Fifth Day : Bhai Dooj

Bhaiya Duj or Bhai Dooj is the festival that is celebrated on the fifth day of diwali and it falls on second day after the main diwali. It is observed as a symbol of love and affection between brothers and sisters and is celebrated in India with great enthusiasm. The sisters put the teeka on the forehead of their brothers with vermilion, sandal paste, roli or kumkum (red turmeric) and pray for them and dear brothers give gifts to their sisters. Bhai Dooj Gifts emotes the feelings of a brother, expresses the gratitude for sharing such a wonderful relationship, reflects all the love shared and fills the heart of a sister with unmatched happiness.  This day also depicts the end of the festival.
